SS Liover Peguero
Height/weight: 6-0, 200
Bats/throws: R/R
Bio: Born Dec. 31, 2000 (21) in Higuey, Dominican Republic
Acquired: Came to the Pirates organization as part of trade that sent Starling Marte to Diamondbacks in 2020.
Career: Ranked as Pirates’ No. 5 prospect and No. 79 in the minors by MLB.com. Made his pro debut in 2018 as a 17-year-old in rookie ball. Has batted .285 for his career and hit .270 with 14 homers and 45 RBIs last season for high-A Greensboro.
What they’re saying: “I do feel they have a really good chemistry among the two of them, and they feed off each other,” new Curve manager Kieran Mattison, speaking last year to the Post-Gazette about Peguero and second baseman Nick Gonzales when they all were at Greensboro.
The bottom line: He has a chance to be an outstanding offensive and defensive shortstop, and will team with 2B Nick Gonzales to give the Curve one of the more dynamic up-the-middle combinations in all the minor leagues.
