March 27. The Cornelius Jazz Festival returns to Smithville Park on Saturday, May 21 with cool performances from Groove Masters and 5th & York, among others.
The event runs from 5 pm to 9 pm on the park field which is at the corner of South Ferry and Catawba Avenue. The free event, put on by Cornelius Parks and Recreation and the Smithville CommUNITY Coalition, is filled with not just jazz, but food trucks, beverages, children’s activities and artists.
Details
Coolers and picnic baskets are allowed, but no glass bottles or containers, tobacco products, e-cigs, pets, tents or open flames.
Event proceeds benefit Smithville CommUNITY Coalition.
History
Founded in 1910, Smithville is one of the oldest communities in Cornelius, with roots dating back to the 1880s.
Background
The Smithville CommUNITY Coalition was formed in 2011 and is made up of residents, area citizens, non-profits and faith-based communities.
Their vision is to revitalize and transform their community into a vibrant, safe and attractive place to live and work that builds pride in its residents and attracts new developments of affordable homes and businesses, focusing on empowering all individuals and strengthening families.
