INDIANAPOLIS — With the 2022 NCAA wrestling season now officially in the books, it comes as no surprise that there’s a strong West Liberty flavor in the final list of NCAA Division II statistical leaders.
Three members of Coach Danny Irwin’s two-time defending regional championship squad were among the top 11 NCAA Division II wrestlers at any weight in the “Most Dominant” category, which ranks wrestlers according to the average number of team points they scored per match.
Senior Cole Laya, who rolled to his second straight NCAA Division II 125-pound title in St. Louis earlier this month, ranked No. 3 nationally with an average of 4.26 points/match.
Junior Francesco Borsellino, the Super Region 3 champion at 285 and a two-time national qualifier also cracked the Top 10 at No. 8 with a 3.82 average.
Sophomore All-American Ty McGeary, who finished third in St. Louis at 174 after winning his first Super Region 3 title, was No. 11 nationally – and No. 1 among all 174-pounders – with a 3.65 average.
In addition, Laya finished tied for 10th in the nation with five Technical Falls while Borsellino tied for 5th in Wins By Fall with 10 mat-slappers.
After rolling to their second consecutive Mountain East Conference and Super Region 3 crowns, the Hilltoppers had five wrestlers earn All-America honors during their run to a third-place finish in the NCAA Division II Nationals.
The third-place finish was the highest for a West Liberty team during the school’s NCAA Division II era and the second-highest national finish in more than a half-century of Hilltopper wrestling. The WLU wrestlers were second at the 1995 NAIA Nationals.
