A Dunkirk Memorial American Legion Auxiliary Unit 62 meeting was called to order recently by President Dawn Ransom. The opening prayer was read by Chaplain Lucinda Simpson and those in attendance recited the Pledge of Allegiance and Preamble to the Auxiliary Constitution. Treasurer Kyle Ahlstrom reported on the financials that were approved and filed for audit.
Simpson sent sympathy cards to the families of our recently deceased auxiliary members, Sandy Gregoreski and Carol Sutton and a brief service was held to drape the Auxiliary Charter in their memory. Donations were made to the Auxiliary Emergency Fund to assist ALA tornado victims as well as the Warriors Family Assistance Program. Americanism Chair Pat Kibbe reported members displayed flags, recited the pledge of allegiance, and junior members participated with Girl Scouts in a veteran’s day ceremony.
Community Service Chair Ransom collected data for members who volunteered at nursing homes, Meals on Wheels, Special Olympics, Dunkirk Senior Center, Buffalo VA Hospital, and provided a funeral breakfast. Leadership Chair Audrey Miga gave an update on the virtual Mid-winter conference and workshops. National Security Chair Janet Jagoda reported several members collected, clipped, and sorted coupons that were mailed to the troops overseas, valued at over $25,000. Manufacturer’s coupons, canceled stamps, and can tabs are always welcome at the Post.
Unit Secretary Miga read thank you cards from the WNY Girl Scouts, the DHS Booster Club for basketball varsity team warmup suits, and Mallory Wojcinski for her fundraiser to the Veterans Buffalo Niagara Honor Flight. The group received a request from the 8th District Auxiliary President to participate in an Education Challenge with NY vs NC by collecting school supplies to donate to a local school. Donations (pens, pencils, glue sticks, notebooks, crayons, markers, etc.) can be dropped off at the Post by March 30th to help New York win the challenge.
Upcoming meeting announcements include the 8th District Auxiliary Spring Conference on Saturday, April 9 beginning at 9 a.m. at the Matthew Glab Post in Lackawanna. The Chautauqua County Auxiliary Joint Meeting with the Legion and SAL is Thursday, April 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the Herman Kent Post 777 in Celoron. The annual Post 62 Memorial Day Chicken Barbeque by Weidner’s will be held on May 30 from noon to sold out along with the Auxiliary’s Silent Auction. Donated auction items can be brought to the Post.
Membership dues for 2022 must be paid to remain in good standing. Members are vital in reaching our goal to continue our mission by supporting and promoting programs that serve veterans and their families. Auxiliary meetings are held the second Tuesday of the month; the next meeting is April 12 at 7 p.m. at Post 62.
