Daniel J. Bauman, 89, of Gerry, previously of Stockton, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 31.
He was born on a farm in Kewanna, Ind. in 1932, to Harry and Sophia Barkey Bauman.
He graduated from North Judson High School in Indiana and went on to earn a bachelors degree from Indiana University, Bloomington, Ind., a masters degree from American University, Washington D.C., and a doctorate from the University of Colorado, Boulder.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he worked in the intelligence field. After his military service, he started his career as a teacher. He taught high school chemistry in Washington D.C., high school sciences for the Department of Defense School on the U.S. Navy Base at Port Lyautey, Morocco, Africa, and high school chemistry in Prince Georges County, Maryland.
After working as an industrial chemist in Boulder, Colo., for fivr years, he became a professor at the State University of New York in Fredonia for 12 years. He went on to run his own business in computer consulting, sales, & service.
A devoted husband for over 61 years, he met the love of his life, Hilary Skilton, while hiking around a mountain in Maryland, with the Wanderbirds Hiking Club in Washington D.C. He enjoyed traveling and saw much of Europe, North America, Morocco, and South Korea.
His hobbies included photography, genealogy, history, and antique farm equipment. He was curious, skeptical, and inventive as a problemsolver. He had a sense of humor. He loved to use his quick wit with friends to challenge and make jokes, and liked to swap stories with his friends.
He is survived by his wife, Hilary; children: Celia (Mack) Webb of Virginia, Ann Bauman of Maryland, Michael (Margo) Bauman of Maryland, Patricia (Tom) Norton of Vermont, and Nicholas (Robin) Bauman of New York; grandchildren: Rebecca (Forrest) Csuy, Seth Norton and Harry Bauman; and a great-grandchild, Claire Csuy. He is mourned by his three siblings: Ben Bauman, Indiana, MaryAnn Barkey, Indiana, and John Bauman, New York; and many nephews, nieces, and cousins.
The family wishes to thank the many people who have helped ease Daniel’s final days including the caring staff at Bergquist Manor in Gerry.
A celebration of life will be held later this year.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be directed to the Stockton Volunteer Fire Station 1.
