{"id":1084,"date":"2022-03-21T23:44:27","date_gmt":"2022-03-21T23:44:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/linksus.net\/david-beckham-lends-instagram-account-with-71-5-million-followers-to-ukrainian-doctor-in-kharkiv-the-washington-post\/"},"modified":"2022-03-21T23:44:27","modified_gmt":"2022-03-21T23:44:27","slug":"david-beckham-lends-instagram-account-with-71-5-million-followers-to-ukrainian-doctor-in-kharkiv-the-washington-post","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/linksus2.linksus.net\/index.php\/2022\/03\/21\/david-beckham-lends-instagram-account-with-71-5-million-followers-to-ukrainian-doctor-in-kharkiv-the-washington-post\/","title":{"rendered":"David Beckham lends Instagram account with 71.5 million followers to Ukrainian doctor in Kharkiv &#8211; The Washington Post"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Soccer legend David Beckham handed over control of his <a href=\"https:\/\/m.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=528009922086538&#038;_rdr\">Instagram account<\/a> \u2014 and its 71.5 million followers \u2014 on Sunday to a Ukrainian doctor caring for pregnant women and their babies in the war-torn city of Kharkiv.<br \/>Throughout the day, Iryna, a pediatric anesthesiologist and the head of the regional perinatal center in Kharkiv, posted a moving first-person account of her daily life in Ukraine\u2019s second-largest city, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/03\/17\/kharkiv-bodies-human-toll\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_11&#038;itid=lk_inline_manual_4\">early target <\/a>in Moscow\u2019s advance that has been ravaged by missile strikes.<br \/>Videos showed her doing rounds underground in a dimly lit basement, where new mothers cradled their babies on makeshift hospital beds lining the walls of the cramped space.<br \/><span class=\"font--article-body font-copy hide-for-print ma-0 pb-md db italic interstitial\"><a data-qa=\"interstitial-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/03\/17\/kharkiv-bodies-human-toll\/?itid=lk_interstitial_manual_6\">In Ukraine\u2019s second-largest city, a furious rain of bombs and rockets takes a toll: \u2018There are no coffins left\u2019<\/a><\/span><br \/>\u201cOn the first day of the war, all pregnant women and mothers were evacuated to the basement. \u2026 We had to learn how to work with bombings and strikes,\u201d she said, according to captions included alongside the video clip.<br \/>\u201cUnfortunately, we can\u2019t take babies who are in intensive care to the basement, because they rely on lifesaving equipment,\u201d she added.<br \/>The doctor, who introduced herself only by her first name, said she had worked \u201c24\/7\u201d since the start of the Russian invasion in February.<br \/>In one video clip, she introduced viewers to Yana and her baby son, Mykhailo, who was born with breathing difficulties on the second day of the war. The boy is better now, but the family home was destroyed and they can\u2019t go back, a caption on the clip stated.<br \/>Beckham, one of the most recognizable former athletes on the planet, is an ambassador for the humanitarian aid agency UNICEF, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org.au\/landing-pages\/ukraine-emergency-appeal?mkwid=s&amp;pcrid=584128299046&amp;pkw=unicef%20ukraine&amp;pmt=e&amp;pdv=c&amp;plid=&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwoduRBhA4EiwACL5RP3Ua1xZl0lCwo1LsJxjwfnr_AfCV2XW1zemwBAoTLex0unYVpFBgQxoCvIwQAvD_BwE&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds\">ramping up<\/a> efforts to deliver aid to children and families in Ukraine.<br \/>Just 25 miles from the country\u2019s eastern border with Russia, a daily barrage of artillery fire, missiles and rockets has rained down on Kharkiv over the past three weeks \u2014 in a grim sign of what could be in store for other Ukrainian cities.<br \/>More than 30 attacks on health-care facilities or equipment have been documented by the World Health Organization since the start of Russia\u2019s assault, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/2022\/03\/09\/russian-airstrike-hospital\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_2&#038;itid=lk_inline_manual_17\">an airstrike<\/a> on a maternity hospital in the port city of Mariupol. A woman and her baby <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/03\/14\/pregnant-woman-baby-death-mariupol-maternity-hospital\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_17\">died in horrific conditions<\/a> in the aftermath of the attack.<br \/><span class=\"font--article-body font-copy hide-for-print ma-0 pb-md db italic interstitial\"><a data-qa=\"interstitial-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/03\/14\/pregnant-woman-baby-death-mariupol-maternity-hospital\/?itid=lk_interstitial_manual_18\">Pregnant mother whose photo showed tragedy of maternity hospital bombing in Ukraine dies with her baby<\/a><\/span><br \/>About half of the population of Kharkiv, some 700,000 people, have left the city, according to the regional administration, part of a wider exodus that has seen more than 3 million people flee Ukraine. About half of those <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/video\/world\/how-ukraines-child-refugees-are-coping-with-the-trauma-of-war\/2022\/03\/19\/fea8c0af-f671-4259-9b15-8bf39b465560_video.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">refugees are children<\/a>.<br \/>\u201cWe are probably risking our lives, but we don\u2019t think about it at all. The war has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/03\/21\/russia-ukraine-refugees-displaced-war-un-numbers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">displaced nearly 1 in 4 people in Ukraine<\/a>, including forcing more than 3 million Ukrainians to flee the country.<br \/><b>The fight: <\/b>Russia \u2014 which has launched more than 1,000 missiles so far \u2014 is increasingly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/03\/17\/mariupol-theater-strike-survivors\/\">relying on \u201cdumb\u201d bombs to wear cities and civilians down<\/a>.
