Russian military forces <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/live-updates\/russia-invades-ukraine-2022-03-20#russia-bombs-a-mariupol-art-school-sheltering-400-civilians-officials-say\">struck the school <\/a>in the besieged city of Mariupol, Ukrainian officials said. Ongoing shelling in the southeastern port city has prevented civilians from safely evacuating. According to the UN, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/live-updates\/russia-invades-ukraine-2022-03-20#more-than-900-civilians-have-died-in-ukraine-the-true-number-is-likely-much-higher\">more than 900 civilians have died<\/a> since the invasion started.<br \/><strong>Slovenia&#8217;s prime minister tells NPR he will send his country&#8217;s ambassador or charg\u00e9 d&#8217;affaires back to Ukraine as a show of support.<\/strong> Prime Minister Janez Jan\u0161a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/live-updates\/russia-invades-ukraine-2022-03-20#slovenia-will-send-its-ambassador-or-charge-daffaires-back-to-ukraine\">also wants the European Union to offer Ukraine<\/a> a fast-track membership. &#8220;This is not time as usual, but there is a war going on,&#8221; he said.<br \/><strong>Australia is banning the export of some types of ore to Russia. <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/live-updates\/russia-invades-ukraine-2022-03-20#australia-bans-the-export-of-aluminum-production-materials-to-russia\">The restrictions<\/a> are designed to curb Russia&#8217;s ability to produce aluminum \u2014 a key component in the making of ammunition. Russia relies on Australia for 20% of its alumina needs. <br \/><strong>Ukraine urged Israel for more support.<\/strong> Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy pleaded for Israel to do more to help Ukraine In a speech to Israeli lawmakers, he also drew comparisons between the Russian invasion and the Holocaust. Zelenskyy asked why Israel \u2014 which is mediating Russia-Ukraine talks \u2014 won&#8217;t give Ukraine weapons or impose sanctions on Russia.
