None. Ever,\u201d reads a <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/BfvcD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">March 15 Facebook post<\/a> that generated more than 400 interactions within six days. \u201cLike most of the world, I saw the video of the \u2018brave Russian woman\u2019 yesterday. On the one hand I thought, \u2018oh, wow, amazing\u2019. But at the same time, there was something that felt off.\u201d<br \/>On March 14, Marina Ovsyannikova <a href=\"\/story\/news\/world\/2022\/03\/15\/russian-tv-protestor-sign-saying-no-war\/7045920001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">interrupted a live broadcast<\/a> from the Channel One network in Moscow by holding a sign reading\u00a0&#8220;No War&#8221; in English. She was later detained and taken into custody, according to the <a href=\"\/story\/news\/world\/2022\/03\/15\/russian-tv-protestor-sign-saying-no-war\/7045920001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">human rights group OVD-Info<\/a>.<br \/>Following her arrest, Ovsyannikova was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-60749279\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">questioned for 14 hours<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/news-photo\/marina-ovsyannikova-the-editor-at-the-state-broadcaster-news-photo\/1239214990\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">appeared in court<\/a>. She was released <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/anti-war-protester-crashed-russian-tv-broadcast-appears\/story?id=83456907\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">and\u00a0charged with<\/a> \u201cdiscrediting the Russian Armed Forces,&#8221; according to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/pchikov\/status\/1503453373978267653\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Pavel Chikov<\/a>, a Russian human rights lawyer representing her.<br \/><strong>Follow us on Facebook!<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/usatodayfactcheck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Like our page to get updates throughout the day on our latest debunks<\/a>\u00a0<br \/>The user\u00a0who published the Facebook post, Texas-based singer-songwriter Bria Blessing,\u00a0questioned how Ovsyannikova gained access to the studio with a large poster, her \u201cnonchalant, almost playful\u201d body language and the lack of reaction from the news anchor sitting at the desk.<br \/>\u201cThe answer &#8211; it was all staged. It\u2019s now come out that the whole thing was fake,\u201d Blessing wrote,\u00a0pointing to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/2015\/apr\/09\/kremlin-hall-of-mirrors-military-information-psychology?fbclid=IwAR3az6CXaFVa6kQ-LOHLcWlKp-pKWfEeYJt0GUaBGZDCJH0YUZZ8UJehqgc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">a 2015 article<\/a> from The Guardian about the Kremlin\u2019s information warfare.<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/DkPd1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Similar versions of<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.ph\/sBt2J\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">the claim circulated on<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220318164230\/https:\/\/twitter.com\/grishchukroma\/status\/1503500141159985157\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Facebook and Twitter<\/a>,\u00a0where\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20220318164224\/https:\/\/twitter.com\/InnaSovsun\/status\/1503725248549691401\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">some members of Ukraine&#8217;s parliament<\/a> shared it.<br \/>But there are live broadcasts on state-owned Russian TV channels, according to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/factchecks\/2022\/mar\/17\/facebook-posts\/news-and-other-programs-are-broadcast-live-russian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\"> independent fact-checking organizations<\/a>. Media and disinformation experts say\u00a0the post isn&#8217;t evidence the demonstration was fake.<br \/>In an email to USA TODAY, Larissa Doroshenko, one of the users who shared the post, offered no evidence that TV broadcasts are not live or that the protest was staged.<strong><\/strong><br \/>USA TODAY reached out to the Facebook users who shared the claim for comment.\u00a0<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.research.manchester.ac.uk\/portal\/vera.tolz.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Vera Tolz<\/a>, a professor of Russian studies at the University of Manchester, said\u00a0in an email that\u00a0there had been live TV news broadcasts in Russian until at least March 17, noting that state-owned channels modified their approach to broadcasting in response to the protest.<br \/>\u201cHistorically, all major newscasts are \u2018clean live\u2019 because news could happen during the show and the importance may require immediate reaction from an anchor,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/communicationleadership.usc.edu\/fellows\/visiting\/vasily-gatov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Vasily Gatov<\/a>, a Russian media analyst and senior fellow at the University of Southern California\u2019s Annenberg Center, told USA TODAY in an email.\u00a0<br \/><strong class=gnt_ar_b_al>Fact check roundup:<\/strong><a href=\"\/story\/news\/factcheck\/2022\/02\/28\/fact-check-whats-true-and-whats-false-invasion-ukraine\/6952717001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">What&#8217;s true and what&#8217;s false about the Russian invasion of Ukraine<\/a><br \/>He pointed to and translated a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/yulia.pankratova\/posts\/10229231587800833\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">March 15 Facebook post<\/a> from his friend and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlanticcouncil.org\/blogs\/new-atlanticist\/russian-journalists-fire-back-as-their-kremlin-picked-editor-draws-a-line-in-the-sand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">former Channel One news anchor<\/a> Yulia Pankratova, who wrote that the network\u2019s evening news broadcast always airs live, without even a one-minute delay.<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.salford.ac.uk\/our-staff\/marek-bekerman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Marek Bekerman<\/a>, a lecturer in international journalism at the University of Salford in the United Kingdom, said in an email that while it\u2019s easy to deceive audiences into believing a pre-recorded\u00a0item is live, it would be difficult to do so \u201con a continuous basis over a period of time for a news-oriented outlet.\u201d He said it\u2019s also \u201cnot practical\u201d or necessary for the purposes of Russian propaganda or disinformation.<br \/>\u201cThere is no logical connection between this incident and the coverage of the civilian deaths or atrocities in the conflict,\u201d Bekerman said. \u201cClaiming that the protest on Russian television distracts attention away from events on the ground verges on paranoia \u2013 if anything, it brings it in a sharper focus.\u201d<br \/><strong class=gnt_ar_b_al>More:<\/strong><a href=\"\/videos\/news\/2022\/03\/16\/biden-uses-presidential-authority-give-more-assistance-ukraine\/7068388001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">President Biden uses presidential power to give additional $800 million to Ukraine<\/a><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/profiles\/adrian-campbell-157129\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Adrian Campbell<\/a>, an associate professor at the University of Birmingham in the U.K., said if the news wasn&#8217;t broadcast live, it would have been reflected in reporting of the incident from independent Russian news outlets, such as Meduza.\u00a0<br \/>Social media users expressed skepticism that Ovsyannikova was able to interrupt the broadcast and get through security. But Russian media experts say it isn&#8217;t unusual for a producer to have studio access.\u00a0<br \/>&#8220;Ovsyannikova&#8217;s social media shows that she had been a long-time employee of the television network,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/merrill.umd.edu\/directory\/sarah-oates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">Sarah Oates,<\/a> a professor at the University of Maryland who researches Russian propaganda, said in an email. &#8220;Television production works in Russia very much the way it does in the west \u2013 trusted employees are often near the set and have full access.&#8221;\u00a0<br \/>Ovsyannikova used her employee ID badge to pass through two security check points and \u201cbreezed past a final guard\u201d at the studio door, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/marina-ovsyannikova-russia-journalist-protester-11647544898?page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">according to the Wall Street Journal<\/a>.<br \/>Pankratova, the former Channel One news anchor, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/yulia.pankratova\/posts\/10229231587800833\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\">said\u00a0in the Facebook post<\/a> that<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/yulia.pankratova\/posts\/10229231587800833\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\":b|e|inline click|${u}\" class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\"><\/a> when she worked for the network, security guards were in place.
