Baulina was killed in a rocket strike while on assignment in Kyiv.<br \/>Russian journalist Oksana Baulina was killed by a rocket strike while on assignment in Kyiv, <a href=\"https:\/\/theins.ru\/en\/news\/249571\">according to her employer<\/a>, the independent news website <em>The Insider<\/em>.<br \/>The site said she &#8220;died under fire&#8221; while &#8220;filming the destruction after Russian troops shelled the Podil district of the capital.&#8221; Another civilian was killed in the attack, it added, and two people who were with Baulina were hospitalized with injuries.<br \/>Baulina previously worked as a producer for the Anti-Corruption Foundation, the Russian non-profit established more than a decade ago by vocal Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny. After the Russian government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/06\/09\/1004938395\/a-russian-court-has-outlawed-groups-linked-to-putin-opponent-alexei-navalny\">designated it an extremist organization<\/a> in June 2021, Baulina had to leave the country in order to continue reporting on government corruption for <em>The Insider<\/em>, which is headquartered in Latvia.<br \/>&#8220;Oksana went to Ukraine as a correspondent, she managed to send several reports from Lviv and Kyiv,&#8221; the publication added. &#8220;The Insider expresses its deepest condolences to Oksana&#8217;s family and friends.&#8221;<br \/>Baulina&#8217;s coworkers and supporters are remembering her life on social media and demanding accountability for her death.<br \/>Investigative journalist Alexey Kovalyov, who said he had known Baulina for almost two decades and worked with her at several independent outlets, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Alexey__Kovalev\/status\/1506705159388385290?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1506705159388385290%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fapp.grovecms.org%2Fcms%2Fcontent%2FexternalPreviewFrame%3Furl%3Dhttps3A2F2Ftwitter.com2FAlexey__Kovalev2Fstatus2F15067051593883852903Fs3D2026t3D0Do8VvsFwjfw-Vyk2-w1vw\">described her in a tweet<\/a> as having a &#8220;phenomenal sense of moral clarity.&#8221; Journalist Christo Grozev <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/christogrozev\/status\/1506706389346959362?s=20&#038;t=5i6V2gRkmD6SoM4VTphaWA\">called her <\/a>&#8220;amazingly brave.&#8221;<br \/>Vladimir Milov, who worked with Baulina at the Anti-Corruption Foundation, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/v_milov\/status\/1506710358475644933?s=20&#038;t=kMC3bJQVd260jnXH9lbjXg\">vowed in a tweet<\/a> to avenge her.<br \/>&#8220;I will never forget her and to all those who are responsible for her death I promise that they won&#8217;t get away with (only) a trial and a verdict,&#8221; Milov wrote, according to a translation from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2022\/3\/24\/unbelievable-horror-russian-journalist-killed-in-ukraine\">Al Jazeera<\/a>.<br \/><em>The Insider<\/em> said it will continue to cover the war in Ukraine, &#8220;including such Russian war crimes as indiscriminate shelling of residential areas which result in the deaths of civilians and journalists.&#8221;<br \/>Sergiy Tomalenko, the head of the Ukrainian journalist&#8217;s union, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sergiy.tomilenko\/posts\/4956546277763530\">wrote on Facebook<\/a> that Baulina was not the only journalist whose death by Russian forces was reported on Wednesday.<br \/>Viktor D\u00eadov, the operator of a local television channel in the besieged southeastern city of Mariupol, was reportedly killed there on March 11, according to Facebook&#8217;s English translation of the post.<br \/>Several other journalists have been killed while covering the war in Ukraine since it first broke out a month ago.<br \/>They include U.S. video journalist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/03\/13\/1086345532\/american-journalist-killed-in-ukraine\">Brent Renaud<\/a>, Fox News cameraman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/03\/15\/1086681148\/fox-news-team-killed-pierre-zakrzewski\">Pierre Zakrzewski<\/a> and Ukrainian freelancer Oleksandra Kuvshynova. Citing Ukrainian reports, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-60855732#:~:text=Two%20weeks%20later%2C%20US%20journalist,on%20the%20outskirts%20of%20Kyiv.\">BBC says<\/a> that Ukrainian journalist Shakirov Dilerbek Shukurovych was killed in late February, camera operator Yevhenii Sakun was killed during Russian shelling of Kyiv&#8217;s television tower in March and investigative journalist Viktor Dudar died during a battle with Russian troops near the southern city of Mykolaiv.<br \/>Tributes to Baulina poured out on Twitter:<br \/>And now it&#39;s someone I&#39;ve known for 16 years and worked with at several independent outlets.
