The mint is using a patented new chemistry\u2014created by Canadian-based Excir\u2014to recover and reuse the gold, and other metals, within these old circuit boards.<br \/>\u201cWe estimate that 99% of the UK\u2019s circuit boards are currently shipped overseas to be processed at high temperatures in smelters,&#8221; said Sean Millard, Chief Growth Officer at The Royal Mint. &#8220;This approach is revolutionary and offers huge potential to reuse our planet\u2019s precious resources, reduce the environmental footprint of electronic waste and create new jobs.&#8221;<br \/>The unique chemistry is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.royalmint.com\/aboutus\/press-centre\/the-royal-mint-to-build-world-first-plant-to-turn-uks-electronic-waste-into-gold\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">capable of recovering almost 100%<\/a> of the precious metals contained within electronic waste\u2014selectively targeting the metal in seconds. However it is biodegradable, and has negligible impact on the environment.<br \/>Construction of a new plant in South Wales should be completed this year, and will be up and running in 2023\u2014and capable of processing 90 tons of circuit boards every week, while producing hundreds of kilograms of gold.<br \/>Britain&#39;s Royal Mint is building a plant to process electronic waste such as mobile phones and laptops, reclaiming gold and other precious metals <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/t5W2FbyRQ7\">pic.twitter.com\/t5W2FbyRQ7<\/a><br \/>For at least 4,000 years, societies have seen the value in basing monetary exchange systems on gold.
