The brothers plan to retire in May.
Hogg Brothers to Retire
In 1970, Richard Nixon was President, songs such as Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and the Jackson 5’s “I’ll Be There” were on the radio. In January of that year a young barber who grew up near Saratoga began working in a little shop near the creek on South Street in Winchester. In 1973, he was joined by his brother. Wayne and Warren Hogg purchased Moore’s Maple Crest Barber Shop and the brothers have been cutting and styling hair in Winchester ever since. That era will soon come to an end. The building is currently up for sale, and the brothers plan to retire in May.
In 1977, they purchased the building at the corner of Meridian and North Streets across from the Winchester Post Office. In this building they opened Hair Crafters in the part of the building that had been an office for a local chiropractor. The portion of the building now occupied by the Cancer Services of Randolph County had been a barber shop that was operated by Kurt Luedike.
Between them the brothers have over 100 years experience of cutting hair. Both of the brothers attended Indiana Barber’s School in Indianapolis. Although the school’s location had moved when Warren attended.
“I worked at a shop in Muncie for five years before I came to Winchester,” said Wayne. “My senior year of high school, I had a summer job at Ohio Valley Gas. I then worked at Overmeyer Foundry. After completing barber college, I worked at Friar’s Barber Shop in Muncie for three years until going into business with my brother at Maple Crest Barber Shop in Winchester,” added Warren. “I remember McGalliard being only two lanes at the time,” said Warren. “Where the Mall is now was a field. I remember seeing guys rabbit hunting there on my way to work,” added Wayne.
“We’ve seen a lot of changes through the years,” said Wayne. “Long hair, short hair, perms for both men and women, we’ve been through all sorts of styles,” he continued. The changes also go beyond hairstyles. “This corner used to be pretty busy. Indiana Michigan was on the corner, the gas station and car dealer ship was down the street. As was Girton’s Auto Parts. There were even several places to eat. Back then they used to let the kids out of school for an hour for lunch. Some of those places had really good food,” Wayne recalls.
The brothers have also been active in the community for many years. They were involved with the Jaycees for many years, and are quite active with the Farmland Conservation Club. They have also been active coaching and sponsoring little league and softball teams over the years. Wayne also volunteers a few days a week at the Randolph County YMCA.
The brothers plan to spend their retirement golfing, fishing, hunting, and spending time with their families. Wayne and his wife, Connie have two children. “Michelle and her husband, Matt, currently live in Malta. They have two children Emma and Alex,” said Wayne. “Robbie and his wife, Shanna, also have two kids Jacob and Savannah. Rob is the Manager of Shakamak State Park in Southern Indiana,” he continued. Connie worked for several years as a nutritionist with the school lunch program at Randolph Central Schools.
Warren and his wife, Mindy, have two children Tracy and Trevor. Mindy has retired after several years of working in local banks. Warren and Mindy have six grandsons and a great-granddaughter.
“What we’ll miss the most is talking with our customers,” they say. “There are some customers where we’ve cut the hair of several generations. We’d like to thank all of our customers over the many years for keeping us in business,” they add. “Since the pandemic, things have slowed down quite a bit,” said Wayne. “We’ve cut back our hours a bit,” added Warren.
“The plan is to remain here until the building sells. We’re planning on retiring by the end of May,” said Wayne. “We’d like for it to remain a barber shop, but that depends upon who buys it,” added Warren.
After many years of cutting and styling hair, the brothers are looking forward to spending time with their families and enjoying their hobbies. “Until we have to get a job at Walmart to help pay for them,” joked Warren. “Things change as time goes by, I believe that Tom Cockerill is the only person that is still in business from when we started,” said Wayne. The Hogg brothers have definitely seen the long and short of it when it comes to business in downtown Winchester throughout the years. The loss of their business will be felt, but the memories they share with their customers will remain as we see what the future holds for the Hair Crafters.
We’re always interested in hearing about news in our community.
