{"id":3187,"date":"2022-03-30T19:09:33","date_gmt":"2022-03-30T19:09:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/linksus.net\/teenager-paralyzed-from-tennessee-tornado-walks-again-after-3-months-today\/"},"modified":"2022-03-30T19:09:33","modified_gmt":"2022-03-30T19:09:33","slug":"teenager-paralyzed-from-tennessee-tornado-walks-again-after-3-months-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/linksus2.linksus.net\/index.php\/2022\/03\/30\/teenager-paralyzed-from-tennessee-tornado-walks-again-after-3-months-today\/","title":{"rendered":"Teenager Paralyzed From Tennessee Tornado Walks Again After 3 Months &#8211; TODAY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/shop\/amazon-useful-affordable-products-t246777\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">29 problem-solving Amazon finds you didn\u2019t know you needed<\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/shop\/amazon-useful-affordable-products-t246777\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class=\"breaking-marquee__icon icon icon-arrow-link\"><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sections<br \/>Shows<br \/>More<br \/>Follow today<br \/>More Brands<br \/>A 14-year-old boy, who became paralyzed after a tornado tore through his home in December, has walked out of the hospital.<br \/>Kyle Koehn and his family&#8217;s home in Dresden, Tennessee, was leveled during a tornado that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/weather\/quad-state-tornado-crossed-four-states-four-hours-leaving-trail-death-rcna8465\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ripped through four states<\/a> last year. <br \/>\u201c[I] heard the house start splintering and that\u2019s the last we remember until we woke up in the field,\u201d his father, Darwin, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ksdk.com\/article\/news\/local\/making-a-difference\/boy-paralyzed-tornado-walks-out-of-st-louis-hospital-weeks-later\/63-bd57c922-cf4b-498c-86ba-129b2cebb044\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told St. Louis NBC affiliate KSDK<\/a>.<br \/>Most of Kyle\u2019s family wound up about 180 feet from the home, while he landed a few yards away. <br \/>\u201cHe was moaning,\u201d Darwin said. \u201cAnd I said right there, \u2018That boy is hurt bad.&#8217;\u201d<br \/>Kyle says that he didn&#8217;t recall much of the pain right after it happened, but he remembers it being &#8220;cold&#8221; and &#8220;wet.&#8221; <br \/>Two weeks later, Kyle was taken to Ranken-Jordan Pediatric Bridge Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.<br \/>\u201cHe had a fracture that involved every vertebrae in his back,\u201d said Dr. Connie Simmons, a pediatrician at Ranken-Jordan. \u201cHe had no feeling from his belly button, basically, down.\u201d<br \/>Kyle quickly realized that learning to walk again was not going to be easy, but his team pushed him to keep going.<br \/>\u201cThey\u2019ll make you do stuff that you think is really hard,&#8221; Kyle mentioned. &#8220;But they\u2019ll make you do it.&#8221; <br \/>Kyle&#8217;s family also couldn\u2019t be with him during the first half of his recovery because his parents were tending to their own injuries from the tornado back home. <br \/>\u201cThe first time we saw him was here six weeks later,\u201d his mother, Kimberly, said. \u201cThat\u2019s how long it took for us to recover enough to travel up here.\u201d<br \/>Despite the obstacles, Kyle persevered, going on a treadmill and working with therapists to walk down stairs.<br \/>\u201cWe knew that this was a kid that was going to fight hard,\u201d Simmons said.<br \/>12 weeks after the incident, Kyle was discharged and walked out of the hospital. His school chartered a bus to drive to St. Louis so his friends and family could greet him when walking out of the hospital. <br \/>In addition to his community, Kyle remains grateful for all the support he\u2019s received from his team of doctors and therapists.<br \/>\u201cThey\u2019ve been wonderful, couldn\u2019t ask for better,\u201d he said.<br \/>And while Kyle&#8217;s road to recovery is still underway, Simmons remains hopeful that he will &#8220;continue to improve&#8221; and &#8220;return to some fun teenage activities.&#8221; <br \/>Drew Weisholtz is a reporter for TODAY Digital, focusing on pop culture, nostalgia and trending stories.
