{"id":3322,"date":"2022-03-31T10:58:48","date_gmt":"2022-03-31T10:58:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/linksus.net\/facebook-owner-reportedly-paid-republican-firm-to-push-message-tiktok-is-the-real-threat-the-guardian\/"},"modified":"2022-03-31T10:58:48","modified_gmt":"2022-03-31T10:58:48","slug":"facebook-owner-reportedly-paid-republican-firm-to-push-message-tiktok-is-the-real-threat-the-guardian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/linksus2.linksus.net\/index.php\/2022\/03\/31\/facebook-owner-reportedly-paid-republican-firm-to-push-message-tiktok-is-the-real-threat-the-guardian\/","title":{"rendered":"Facebook owner reportedly paid Republican firm to push message TikTok is \u2018the real threat\u2019 &#8211; The Guardian"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Meta, owner of Facebook and Instagram, solicited campaign accusing TikTok of being a danger to American children<br \/>Meta, the owner of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/facebook\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Facebook<\/a>, Instagram and other social media platforms, is reportedly paying a notable GOP consulting firm to create public distrust around TikTok.<br \/>The campaign, launched by Republican strategy firm Targeted Victory, placed op-eds and letters to the editor in various publications, accusing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/tiktok\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">TikTok<\/a> of being a danger to American children, along with other disparaging accusations.<br \/>The firm wanted to \u201cget the message out that while Meta is the current punching bag, TikTok is the real threat especially as a foreign owned app that is #1 in sharing data that young teens are using,\u201d wrote a director for the firm in a February email, part of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IyanlaVanzant\/status\/1509153477422989319?s=20&amp;t=RzMTurNA8uSzUKFfSZKrNA\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">a trove of emails revealed by the Washington Post<\/a>.<br \/>\u201cDream would be to get stories with headlines like \u2018From dances to danger: how TikTok has become the most harmful social media space for kids,\u2019\u201d another staffer wrote.<br \/>Campaign operatives promoted stories to local media, including some unsubstantiated claims, that tied TikTok to supposedly dangerous trends popular among teenagers \u2013 despite those trends originating on Facebook.<br \/>Such trends included the viral 2021 \u201cdevious lick\u201d trend, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/education\/2021\/sep\/18\/devious-licks-tiktok-challenge-vandalism-schools\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">where students vandalized school property<\/a>. Targeted Victory pushed stories on \u201cdevious lick\u201d to local publications in Michigan, Minnesota, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Washington DC.
