Anyone can read what you share.<br \/><span class=\"byline-prefix\">By <\/span><span class=\"css-1baulvz last-byline\" itemprop=\"name\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/by\/maya-salam\" class=\"css-mrorfa e1jsehar0\">Maya Salam<\/a><\/span><br \/>Bruce Willis, the prolific action-movie star, has been diagnosed with <a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/30\/well\/mind\/aphasia-symptoms-treatment.html\" title=\"\">aphasia<\/a> \u2014 a disorder that affects the brain\u2019s language center and a person\u2019s ability to understand or express speech \u2014 and will step away from acting, his ex-wife, Demi Moore, announced in an Instagram post on Wednesday.<br \/>\u201cTo Bruce\u2019s amazing supporters, as a family we wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities,\u201d <a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Cbu-mD7LMPg\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Moore\u2019s post reads<\/a>. \u201cAs a result of this and with much consideration Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him.\u201d<br \/>\u201cWe are moving through this as a strong family unit, and wanted to bring his fans in because we know how much he means to you, as you do to him,\u201d it continued. \u201cAs Bruce always says, \u2018Live it up,\u2019 and together we plan to do just that.\u201d<br \/>The post is signed \u201cEmma, Demi, Rumer, Scout, Tallulah, Mabel &amp; Evelyn\u201d \u2014 referring to Emma Heming Willis, Willis\u2019s wife, and his children. Moore is the mother of Rumer, Scout and Tallulah, and Heming Willis is mother to Mabel and Evelyn.<br \/>The post was accompanied by a comical photo of a younger, smirking Willis wearing a bathrobe, sunglasses, a gold chain with a cross, and a towel around his head.<br \/>His wife, and Rumer, Scout and Tallulah all posted the same message and image on their Instagram pages.<br \/>Representatives for Willis did not respond to a request for comment.<br \/>Willis, who turned 67 this month, is most famous for his role as the rough-around-the-edges, yet clever, New York City cop John McClane in the highly successful \u201cDie Hard\u201d movie series, made up of five films from 1988 to 2013.<br \/>He has also starred in critically acclaimed films like \u201cPulp Fiction\u201d (1994), \u201cThe Sixth Sense\u201d (1999) and \u201cMoonrise Kingdom\u201d (2012).<br \/>M. Night Shyamalan, the director of \u201cThe Sixth Sense,\u201d <a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2000\/03\/12\/movies\/oscar-films-first-timers-a-director-with-a-sense-of-where-he-s-going.html\" title=\"\">has said that<\/a> it was Willis\u2019s admirably level performance in \u201cDie Hard\u201d that showed him that Willis could pull off the subdued child psychiatrist Malcolm Crowe in his horror-thriller, which would go on to be nominated for six Oscars, including best picture. And when Shyamalan wrote the screenplay for 2000\u2019s \u201cUnbreakable,\u201d he said he did so with Willis in mind.<br \/>In her <a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1994\/09\/23\/movies\/film-festival-review-pulp-fiction-quentin-tarantino-s-wild-ride-life-s-dangerous.html\" title=\"\">New York Times review<\/a> of \u201cPulp Fiction,\u201d Janet Maslin said that Willis and his co-stars John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson \u201cmay all sound like known quantities, but none of them have ever had quite the opportunities this material offers.\u201d Willis \u201cdisplays a tough, agile energy when placed in the most mind-boggling situation,\u201d she wrote.<br \/>In 1997, during the last days of filming the action-thriller \u201cMercury Rising,\u201d <a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1997\/11\/09\/movies\/film-the-actor-an-action-movie-hero-who-eludes-the-label.html\" title=\"\">Willis told The New York Times<\/a> that he was, in a way, surprised to have found success on the big screen. \u201cWhen I was coming up, there were guys like Robert Redford and Paul Newman and Warren Beatty \u2014 those were movie stars,\u201d he said. \u201cIt all got handed to me pretty quickly.\u201d Just days later, he would begin working on the highest-grossing film of 1998, \u201cArmageddon,\u201d from the director Michael Bay.<br \/>In 2013, when asked by <a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gq.com\/story\/bruce-willis-interview-gq-march-2013\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">GQ magazine<\/a> to complete the sentence: \u201cIf I live long enough, I \u2014,\u201d Willis said: \u201cshould approach a bigger task than I approach now.\u201d<br \/>When asked if he has a motto, he said: \u201c\u2018Live and let live\u2019 is the closest I have. It works for pretty much everything. It has comic aspects to it and it has the real-deal aspects to it.\u201d<br \/>On Wednesday, there was an outpouring of appreciation for Willis and support for his family on social media from fans, stars and other notable figures.<br \/>In response to Rumer Willis\u2019s Instagram post, Sarah Paulson, who worked with Bruce Willis in \u201cGlass,\u201d Shyamalan\u2019s 2019 sci-fi thriller, said: \u201cHe was such an incredible acting partner to me, and is the loveliest, most gentle &amp; hilarious man. He reigns supreme in my book.\u201d (In <a class=\"css-1g7m0tk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/01\/17\/movies\/glass-review.html\" title=\"\">her Times review<\/a> of \u201cGlass,\u201d Manohla Dargis wrote, \u201c[Samuel L.] Jackson and especially Willis remind you again of how fine they can be when asked for more than booming shtick and smirk.\u201d)<br \/>In response to Moore\u2019s Instagram post, Jamie Lee Curtis wrote: \u201cGrace and guts! Love to you all!\u201d; and Rita Wilson wrote: \u201cMy heart goes out to Bruce, and all of the family. So thankful you shared this with us. Aphasia makes it hard for me to find the right words.
