The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and\u00a0Sciences<\/a> has\u00a0announced the initiation of\u00a0“disciplinary proceedings” against\u00a0Will Smith<\/a> over his\u00a0behavior at Sunday’s Oscars<\/a>.\u00a0
The Academy said in a statement Wednesday that its Board of Governors has begun the process of disciplining Smith for “inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behavior and compromising the integrity of the Academy.”
The Academy also\u00a0said that Smith was asked to leave the Oscars after slapping Chris Rock<\/a> on stage and yelling expletives, but the actor refused. Smith went on to win the Oscar for best actor for his role in “King Richard,” giving a tearful speech on stage.
“Things unfolded in a way we could not have anticipated,” the Academy’s statement read. “While we would like to clarify that Mr. Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, we also recognize we could have handled the situation differently.”
The Academy also condemned Smith’s actions as a “deeply shocking, traumatic event to witness in person and on television” and apologized to Rock, whom Smith slapped on stage over a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith<\/a>‘s bald head.

As a result of Smith’s actions, the Academy has provided the actor with “15 days notice of a vote regarding his violations and sanctions, and the opportunity to be heard beforehand by means of a written response.” The Academy said it may decide to take other disciplinary action, including suspension, expulsion or other sanctions, at its next board meeting April 18.
The organization considers “physical contact that is uninvited and, in the situation, inappropriate and unwelcome” as “unacceptable conduct,”\u00a0according to the Academy’s Standard of Conduct.\u00a0
“If any member is found by the Academy to have violated these standards or to have compromised the integrity of the Academy by their actions \u2026 the Academy may take any disciplinary action permitted by the Academy\u2019s Bylaws, up to and including suspension of membership or expulsion from membership,” the document reads.\u00a0
Other disciplinary action includes a public or private reprimand, temporary or permanent privilege to participate in Academy events, temporary or permanent loss of award eligibility and also possible revocation of an Academy award.\u00a0\u00a0
In a previous statement Monday afternoon, the Academy said\u00a0it planned to investigate the incident: “The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night’s show. We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law.”
This was a step\u00a0further than the Academy’s statement just after Sunday night’s show, which said\u00a0the organization\u00a0does not condone violence.

As\u00a0Rock presented\u00a0the award for best documentary feature, the comedian made a joke about Pinkett Smith.\u00a0Rock said he couldn’t wait to see her star in “G.I. Jane 2,” referencing her shaved head.\u00a0
Last year, Pinkett Smith said she went bald after daughter\u00a0Willow\u00a0encouraged her to do so.\u00a0She also revealed\u00a0she has had alopecia, an autoimmune disease<\/a>\u00a0that results in severe hair loss, since 2018.
Smith shared a statement on Instagram<\/a> Monday condemning violence “in all its forms” and apologizing to Rock,\u00a0the Academy, the Oscars’ producers, everyone in attendance\u00a0and everyone watching\u00a0from home.
“My behavior at last night\u2019s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable,” he wrote, adding that he “reacted emotionally.” “I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”

At first, Smith seemingly laughed at the joke, but then\u00a0got up\u00a0and hit\u00a0Rock in the face\u00a0as he stood on the stage. Rock appeared to be in shock as Smith\u00a0sat back down and shouted, “Keep my wife’s name out of your (expletive)\u00a0mouth,” twice.\u00a0
The feed from ABC appeared to cut\u00a0for many viewers during the incident,\u00a0but international broadcasts\u00a0picked up the entire moment, with Rock saying, “Will Smith just smacked the (expletive) out of me.” Rock\u00a0declined to file a police report Sunday,\u00a0Los Angeles police appeared to confirm.\u00a0

During his acceptance speech for best actor later in the night, Smith apologized to the Academy, but not to Rock.
“I’m being called on in my life to love people and to protect people and to be a river to my people,” he said through tears. “I know to do what we do, you\u2019ve got to be able to take abuse.\u00a0You\u2019ve got to be able to have people talk crazy about you. In this business, you\u2019ve got to be able to have people disrespecting you. And you got to smile, and you’ve got to pretend like that\u2019s okay.”
He continued: “Art imitates life. I look like the crazy father, just like they said about Richard Williams. But love will make you do crazy things.”\u00a0
Pinkett Smith broke\u00a0her silence about\u00a0the incident Tuesday, sharing a graphic on Instagram<\/a> that read:\u00a0“This is a season for healing and I’m here for it.”
