{"id":3604,"date":"2022-04-02T00:26:43","date_gmt":"2022-04-02T00:26:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/linksus.net\/betty-reid-soskin-americas-oldest-active-ranger-retires-at-the-age-of-100-the-guardian\/"},"modified":"2022-04-02T00:26:43","modified_gmt":"2022-04-02T00:26:43","slug":"betty-reid-soskin-americas-oldest-active-ranger-retires-at-the-age-of-100-the-guardian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/linksus2.linksus.net\/index.php\/2022\/04\/02\/betty-reid-soskin-americas-oldest-active-ranger-retires-at-the-age-of-100-the-guardian\/","title":{"rendered":"Betty Reid Soskin, America\u2019s oldest active ranger, retires at the age of 100 &#8211; The Guardian"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>She began working with the National Park Service at 84 to reveal \u2018untold stories\u2019 of Black people\u2019s efforts during the second world war<br \/>Betty Reid Soskin, the National Park Service\u2019s oldest active ranger, has retired at the age of 100.<br \/>Soskin, who worked at the Rosie the Riveter\/WWII Home Front national historical park in Richmond, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/california\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">California<\/a>, spent her last day as she had for the last decade and a half: sharing her experiences and those of other women who worked on the home front in the second world war.<br \/>Soskin was a file clerk in a segregated Union hall in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/san-francisco\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">San Francisco<\/a> Bay area during the conflict, and during her time as a ranger, Soskin sought to shed light on the experiences of women of color during the second world war.<br \/>Her efforts at the park \u2013 and her 100th birthday last fall \u2013 have captivated the public and received coverage from numerous media outlets, including a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/09\/20\/us\/betty-reid-soskin-100.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">profile<\/a> in the New York Times and a portrait taken by Annie Leibovitz. Soskin came into the national spotlight during the 2013 federal government shutdown when she participated in multiple interviews urging lawmakers to act so she could return to work. In 2015, she took part in a tree lighting ceremony at the Obama White House.<br \/>Happy Retirement, Betty!<\/p>\n<p>Betty Reid Soskin, the oldest active ranger in the National Park Service at age 100, retired today after a remarkable career. The park, 18 miles (29km) north of San Francisco, is in the same city where workers produced hundreds of ships during the war.<br \/>She started with the parks service at age 84 after working with the agency on a grant to reveal \u201cuntold stories\u201d of Black people\u2019s efforts in the US during the second world war, and became a permanent employee in 2011.<br \/>\u201cBeing a primary source in the sharing of that history \u2013 my history \u2013 and giving shape to a new national park has been exciting and fulfilling,\u201d she said. \u201cIt has proven to bring meaning to my final years.\u201d<br \/>Soskin\u2019s work brought attention to the unique contributions women of color during the second world war.<br \/>\u201cAs a woman of color, my history with the park is a bit different. My experience was not as a Rosie the Riveter; that tended to be a white woman\u2019s story.
