SILVER CREEK — A community meeting was scheduled to take place at 7 p.m. Thursday to address allegations made in a letter from a staff member to the Silver Creek Board of Education.
Since the March 29 four-page letter to the board was posted to social media, the community has been in a frenzy over an alleged “isolation cell”<\/span> that the letter notes has been utilized in the elementary school “within the last school year.”<\/span> The gathering was to take place at Sky’s the Limit, which is located at 95 Main St.
Photos circulating on social media pictured a room that appeared to be as large as a closet that includes a bench for sitting. A call to Jay Hall, writer of the letter and assistant director of elementary programming at Silver Creek, was answered but he would offer no other comment.
“It truly saddens me to report that this is happening within the walls in Silver Creek Elementary School,”<\/span> Hall wrote in his allegations to the school board. “Children as young as 5 years old are being … locked in the isolation cell.”<\/span>
On Wednesday, Superintendent Todd Crandall echoed the statement on the school’s Facebook post saying the district is “committed to being transparent, thorough.”<\/span> He is hoping an investigation will be completed before the weekend and plans to share the results and update the community “as appropriate.”<\/span>
“At this point, a staff member had shared a concern with the board (Tuesday),”<\/span> Crandall said.
“The Board of Education and I put student and staff safety paramount. The board immediately engaged a third party to begin an investigation into the concerns raised in the letter.”<\/span>
Earlier this month, the district announced the reappointment of Delia Bonenberger as interim elementary principal. Past Principal Sterling Stearns was noted as “unavailable and not in the district until further notice.”<\/span>
According to Board of Education minutes posted online, the district went into executive session during its March 10 meeting for the “purpose of discussing the employment of a particular person”<\/span> at 6 p.m. Public session resumed at 7:37 p.m. Stearns’ departure was announced March 11.
Bonenberger served as the district’s interim middle school principal and interim superintendent during the 2015-16 school year and additionally, she served as interim elementary principal in the past.
