The Pentagon said it has committed more than $1.6 billion in security assistance since Russia\u2019s invasion.<br \/>\u201cThis decision underscores the United States\u2019 unwavering commitment to Ukraine\u2019s sovereignty and territorial integrity in support of its heroic efforts to repel Russia\u2019s war of choice,\u201d Kirby said in a statement.<br \/>The new aid will include Puma unmanned aerial systems \u2014 hand-launched lightweight drones with a range of about a dozen miles that can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/News\/News-Stories\/Article\/Article\/1443054\/small-unmanned-aircraft-prove-worth-in-battlefield-reconnaissance-role\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fly for about two hours<\/a> \u2014 providing Ukrainian infantry with extended reconnaissance capabilities. The Pentagon also intends to send Ukraine \u201cnonstandard\u201d machine guns, meaning the weapons aren\u2019t regularly used by the U.S. military.<br \/>The United States will send armored Humvees, night-vision devices, thermal imagery systems, tactical secure communications systems, commercial satellite imagery services, medical supplies and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/2022\/03\/16\/us-weapons-ukraine\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Switchblade drones<\/a> \u2014 small unmanned aircraft packed with explosives that crash into targets such as tanks in \u201ckamikaze\u201d fashion.<br \/><span class=\"font--article-body font-copy hide-for-print ma-0 pb-md db italic interstitial\"><a data-qa=\"interstitial-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/03\/18\/ukraine-military-aid-shipments\/?itid=lk_interstitial_manual_11\">Inside the transfer of foreign military equipment to Ukrainian soldiers<\/a><\/span><br \/>The announcement comes a day after British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/04\/01\/russia-ukraine-war-news-putin-live-updates\/#link-FJ7WCQ3TFRHNJEZYPP4B77JBIM?itid=lk_inline_manual_12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told reporters<\/a> that Britain and its partners agreed to send Ukraine more lethal aid after a conference involving 35 countries. Wallace said the Ukrainians needed weapons such as long-range artillery to counter Russian sieges of Ukrainian cities, according to British media.<br \/>\u201cAs the tactics on the ground change, we need to change what we supply,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SkyNews\/status\/1509555688690917385\">told<\/a> reporters.<br \/>This week, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/04\/01\/russia-ukraine-war-news-putin-live-updates\/#link-KM6BGHG74BBEHNEQYJIWEHSFVI?itid=lk_inline_manual_16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced <\/a>that Canberra would send Kyiv armored vehicles, a day after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told Australian lawmakers that mine-resistant Australian Bushmasters in Ukraine \u201cwould do much more for our common freedom, our common security than staying parked on your land.\u201d<br \/>\u201cThe package from the [United States] makes a lot of sense,\u201d said Mick Ryan, a retired major general in the Australian army. Ukrainian troops need little training to use the included equipment, while they will also need to replace the drones, ammunition and fuel they use in battle, he said. The Puma drones will be useful in preparing artillery and rocket strikes, Ryan said.<br \/>The United States has rebuffed Zelensky\u2019s other requests, such as setting up a no-fly zone, and Poland\u2019s offer to send fighter jets to Ukraine amid fears of further escalation involving a NATO country. President Biden last month signed a mammoth government spending bill that has $13.6 billion in military and humanitarian aid for Ukraine \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2022\/03\/17\/republicans-ukraine-aid-vote\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">including <\/a>investments meant to help protect against cyberattacks and bolster regional allies against any further Kremlin-led aggression.<br \/>Since the beginning of the<b> <\/b>Biden administration, the United States has<b> <\/b>dispatched more than $2.3 billion in defense support to Ukraine, the Pentagon said.<br \/>As the prospect of a Russian invasion loomed, the U.S. military <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/2022\/03\/04\/us-weapons-ukraine\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">started accelerating weapons shipments<\/a> to Ukraine as early as December. The supplies included weapons useful for fighting in urban areas such as shotguns, and protective suits for soldiers handling unexploded ordnance.<br \/>Since Feb. 24, when Russia invaded, the United States has been sending more Javelin antitank missiles and Stinger antiaircraft missile systems.<br \/>President Biden has said he will not send U.S. troops into Ukraine. But he has ordered more Americans to Eastern Europe to deter Russia from further aggression. About 80,000 U.S. troops are now in Europe.<br \/>\u201cAs the world responds to Russia\u2019s aggression, we\u2019re seeing again how much American leadership matters,\u201d Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/News\/Transcripts\/Transcript\/Article\/2986971\/secretary-of-defense-lloyd-j-austin-iii-remarks-at-us-central-command-change-of\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said <\/a>Friday. \u201cRussia\u2019s invasion isn\u2019t just a mortal threat to Ukraine. It\u2019s a challenge to the rules-based international system.&#8221;<br \/><b>The latest: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/04\/02\/russia-ukraine-war-news-putin-live-updates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The International Committee of the Red Cross will make another attempt Saturday to evacuate civilians<\/a> from the war-torn port city of Mariupol, after Friday\u2019s efforts failed due to what the group called \u201cimpossible\u201d conditions. Roughly 100,000 people remain trapped in Mariupol, according to Kyiv. Meanwhile, online peace talks between Moscow and Kyiv took place Friday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/04\/01\/russia-belgorod-fire-helicopter-ukraine\/?itid=lk_inline_manual_4\">in the aftermath of a fuel depot fire<\/a> in a Russian border city that the Kremlin blamed on a Ukrainian strike.<br \/><b>The fight: <\/b>Nearly five weeks into their invasion, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/02\/24\/maps-ukraine-russia-attack\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Russian forces continue to mount sporadic attacks<\/a> on civilian targets in a number of Ukrainian cities. Russia has been accused of committing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/03\/03\/russia-ukraine-war-crimes-explainer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">war crimes<\/a>.<br \/><b>The weapons: <\/b>Ukraine is making use of weapons such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/03\/12\/javelins-ukraine-russia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Javelin antitank missiles<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/03\/17\/switchblade-drones-ukraine-russia-biden-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Switchblade \u201ckamikaze\u201d drones<\/a>, provided by the United States and other allies.
