Russian forces are retreating from the capital&#8217;s region as they turn their firepower to the south and east.<br \/>As Saturday draws to a close in Kyiv and in Moscow, here are the key developments of the day: <br \/><strong>Russian forces appear to be withdrawing in the area around Ukraine&#8217;s capital<\/strong>, Kyiv, as they turn their attention and firepower further to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/live-updates\/russia-invades-ukraine-2022-04-02#attacks-on-ukraine-move-to-its-east-and-south-but-the-southwest-remains-on-alert\">south and east<\/a>. But southwestern parts of Ukraine remain on high alert.<br \/><strong>Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko tells NPR the city is destroyed<\/strong>. He says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/live-updates\/russia-invades-ukraine-2022-04-02#kyivs-mayor-says-a-compromise-with-russia-is-difficult-in-the-current-state-of-the-war\">compromise with Russia<\/a> is difficult right now, unless Russian forces leave the country. But he says everyone is still hopeful for a diplomatic solution.<br \/><strong>Ukraine and Russia conducted their largest prisoner swap thus far<\/strong>, with 86 soldiers on each side going home. Now, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is saying he&#8217;s willing to exchange all Russian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/live-updates\/russia-invades-ukraine-2022-04-02#ukraine-and-russia-forces-conduct-the-largest-prisoner-swap-thus-far\">prisoners of war<\/a> \u2014 if Russia agrees to stop abducting civilian children.<br \/><strong>A Ukrainian photojournalist who had been missing since March 13 was found dead<\/strong> in a village north of Kyiv. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/live-updates\/russia-invades-ukraine-2022-04-02#the-body-of-a-missing-ukrainian-photojournalist-has-been-found\">Maks Levin<\/a>, 40, was killed with two gunshots, allegedly fired by the Russian military. An investigation into his death has been launched.<br \/><strong>Russia&#8217;s top space official<\/strong> says the future of the country&#8217;s partnership with the U.S., Canada, Europe and Japan on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/live-updates\/russia-invades-ukraine-2022-04-02#russias-space-leader-says-a-partnership-on-the-iss-is-unclear-if-sanctions-arent-lifted\">International Space Station<\/a> is in jeopardy if sanctions from the West are not lifted.
