WARREN — Trumbull County Children Services is kicking off Child Abuse Prevention Month with a pinwheel display and program at 1:30 p.m. today on the lawn of the Kinsman House in Warren.
Tim Schaffner, executive director of TCCS, will speak on the importance of “see something, say something,”<\/span> especially during times when children may be isolated, as part of encouraging vigilance in reporting child abuse.
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month and the Pinwheels for Prevention awareness campaign has been held for the past 16 years.
Among those scheduled to attend today’s event are Mayor Doug Franklin, state Rep. Michael O’Brien, D-Warren, and Trumbull County commissioners.
Schaffner said the display on the lawn holds 1,519 pinwheels, with each representing one report of child maltreatment in Trumbull County in 2021. The Touch of Class 4-H Horse Club set up the pinwheels over the weekend.
Officials said the pinwheels also represent the adults who became advocates for children by reporting suspected abuse or neglect.
The Trumbull County Courthouse and Warren City Hall both will be lit with blue lights throughout the month in recognition of child abuse prevention.
Schaffner explained Pinwheels for Prevention is based on the belief that while the public understands child abuse is a serious problem, there is less understanding of what is needed to prevent child abuse and neglect, and the role people can play in speaking up.
People in the community can take these steps to help ensure children are safe:
\u2022 Make a good-faith report to TCCS when abuse or neglect is suspected, with reports being anonymous;
\u2022 Volunteer time and talent to organizations that focus on children and their families and help bring services to families with mental illness, substance abuse and violence, which in most cases play a role in child maltreatment;
\u2022 Learn about child abuse prevention by having employees of TCCS’s speaker’s bureau present to community groups about services and prevention. For information, contact Michelle Schmader, community liaison \/ recruitment specialist at 330-372-2010, Ext.1343, or michelle.schmader@jfs.ohio.gov.
